HANSMAN SALAD

Shared by: Bob Hansman

In Memory of his mother: Thelma Hansman

This salad has a bunch of weird ingredients but there is nothing to fear. I have eaten this salad since I was a kid and I am still in there kicking. I learned how to make this salad at my mother's knee and have passed it on to another generation.  It is the perfect salad for a picnic, especially with hotdogs and hamburgers. Ask some of the folks that attended the 2001 - 2009 Campouts and they will witness as to its taste (I hope). It will make another appearance during the 2010 Campout.

  • Chop one head of lettuce into small pieces and place in a bowl.

  • Chop one can of SPAM (yes uncooked SPAM) into small beet like pieces and place in the bowl.

  • Chop one white onion into small pieces (this is the hard part) and place in the bowl.

  • Open a standard sized can of peas (drain off the liquid and drink it). Pour the peas into the bowl.

  • Mix a liberal (lots) amount of salad dressing (not mayonnaise) and catsup into a bowl and mix into a Thousand Island type of dressing. (Don't just use Thousand Island as a substitute. That's too easy and won't taste as good).

  • Pour the Thousand Island type of dressing into the bowl containing all the other ingredients.

  • Mix everything well so the dressing and the ingredients are evenly mixed together.

  • Chill in the fridge for a couple of hours.

  • Serve it up.... much to the amazement of others.

Warning!   You may have to increase the amount of ingredients as time goes by to satisfy the growing appetite of your family and guests!
